  • Argentine president threatens Falklands/Chile airlink

    lanARGENTINE President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's speech at the opening session of the United Nations in New York yesterday threatened the airlink between the Falklands and Chile.

    She indicated she will wait a little longer and then feel obliged to revise what she referred to as the provisional agreements still in force over the Falklands - unless Britain agrees to negotiate over Falklands sovereignty, as called for by UN resolutions.

  • Antarctic journeys planned for Poncet's newest yacht

    yacht_jerome_littleANTARCTIC sailors Jerome Poncet and his son Dion are in the process of preparing their newly purchased yacht the Hans Hansson (left) for a late December chartered journey down South.

    The 26.5 metre yacht currently berthed at the Falkland Islands Company jetty is 50 years old but has been renovated both inside and out.

  • Ecotrax trial to briefly close MPA Road

    imageecotraxTHE Mount Pleasant road between the Fitzroy road and the North camp track turnoff will be closed on Sunday 25, between 11am and 3pm for a road sealing trial.

    The Public Works Department (Highways) will undertake a trial of a new road sealing system of Eco Trax  as reported in Penguin News last week.

  • Kirchner in New York to make ‘new claims’ on Falklands

    kirchnerARGENTINA'S President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (left) is currently in New York to attend the annual United Nation's General Assembly.

    Mercopress reports that tomorrow (Wednesday) she is expected to make 'new claims' against the United Kingdom over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Southern Sandwich Islands in a further attempt to persuade the UN to mediate in the claim over the islands.

    Kirchner will also address the Assembly with new claims relating to Iran, as the Argentine government seeks the judicial extradition of eight former Iran officials accused of the terrorist attack to the AMIA Jewish Community Centre in Buenos Aires in 1994.

  • Lively independence day celebrations for Chileans in the Falklands

    chileMEMBERS of the Chilean community working and residing in the Falkland Islands celebrated Chilean Independence Day (September 18) in a traditionally lively manner over the weekend.

    Miguel Barrientos told Penguin News, "there was Chilean/Latin music and a bar extension on September 17 and a lunch with a Chilean menu on the September 18 at the Narrows Bar.

    The Narrows Bar owned by Fortuna Ltd recently came under the management of Chilean chef Carlos Fajardo.

  • Former Falklands chief medical officer appointed to NHS Shetland

    roger_diggleBy Lisa Watson: LONG time Chief Medical Officer for the King Edward VII Hospital in the Falkland Islands, Roger Diggle (left) is the new Medical Director for NHS Shetlands.

    According to the Shetland Times, Dr Roger Diggle is expected take up the three-day-a-week post in December and will work in a clinical role for a further two days a week.

  • Argentina demands apology for Chilean Mayor's use of Falklands name

    capehornBy Lisa Watson: PATAGONIAN radio, Polar, has claimed that Chilean Mayor Hugo Henríquez Matus of Cabo de Hornos (Cape Horn see image left) caused outrage in Argentina when he spoke of an intended visit to the Falkland Islands. All the member states of Mercosur and UNASUR use the designation 'Malvinas' rather than 'Falkland Islands'.

    The Provincial Government in Chile immediately issued a statement expressing surprise at the Mayor's "indiscretion" and said that the Chilean Foreign Ministry had warned Matus, "to refrain from any situation that would bring about problems".

    : ISLANDER Charlie Allan (left) son of Mike and Sarah Allan, is running the Junior Great North Run on Saturday, September 17.

    His mum Sarah is running the Great North Run the next day and starting the Sunday race is the World Championship Gold Medallist Mo Farah. There will be a fly over by the Red Arrows and highlights of the event will be broadcast on BFBS Television at 11.20pm on Sunday.
