A VIGOROUS election campaign, characterised by vocal contributions to public meetings and radio discussions, taking full-page adverts in the Penguin News, and even including informal 'surgeries' at the entrance to the West Store and Chandlery clearly paid dividends for Stanley doctor, Barry Elsby who gained a landslide victory in tonight's by-election. Dr Elsby polled a massive 462 of 702 votes.
Opposing candidates Norman Besley-Clark polled 45 votes, Steve Vincent 94 votes and John Birmingham 95 votes. Twelve votes were rejected for reasons of being spoiled, unmarked or where persons voted twice.
After his election to the Legislative Assembly was announced in the Town Hall by Chief Executive Tim Thorogood, Dr Elsby told Penguin News, "it is a tremendous honour"
