FALKLANDS Hockey Association youth team Wolverines were the ecstatic victors at the Punta Arenas, Chile, Copa Invernada Ice Hockey Tournament on Sunday night.
To add to the excitement, a second Falklands youth team, Bombers, took bronze, and the Islands’ senior team, the Falklands Penguins also achieved bronze.
Malachi Budd of Wolverines was named the top youth player in the tournament, Craig Dockrill of the Penguins, player of the tournament and Dean Ellis of Falklands’ team Dragons was awarded ‘top goalkeeper’. The winners of the titles were voted for by all of the tournament team coaches.
Minutes in to the final youth game, Falklands v Escuela Bulnes, it was clear the Falklands team were playing out of their skins. It was 6-0 by half time and 7-0 with ten minutes still on the clock.
With under two minutes left the Wolves were still hunting down the Bulnes goal with almost brutal determination. The game ended 9-0 in favour of a team with virtually no experience on ice but a product of manager and coach Grant Budd’s single minded vision and their own hard work and tenacity.
